VisitING THE Maldon REGION

HISTORY

Visiting Maldon is like visiting history heaven. Learn what life was like as you explore some of the mines, diggings and museums. When you visit the State Battery and understand the gold extraction process you will wonder at how people could have worked in such a dirty, damp, noisy and toxic environment.

Visit the Maldon District Museum in the historic old Market Building, the Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum, or tour Carman's Tunnel with a local guide. The Victorian Goldfields Railway run regular services and stage numerous events during the year; including the Easter Wine Train, and special steam train rides for kids.

Maldon has the most intact streetscape originating from the gold-rush era of any town in Australia. Wander the main and surrounding streets and see wonderful examples of 19th Century buildings: some of which exhibit construction techniques that are no longer left to see in Australia. Learn what it was like to live in a 19th century mining town as you explore the remnants of mines and diggings that surround Maldon.

BOUTIQUE SHOPPING

Maldon promises to give you a great shopping experience with some of the best boutique shops in Victoria.

There are shops for clothing and shoes; an old fashioned general store; and, as befits a heritage town, quality antiques and collectibles, an old fashioned lolly shop, ice cream shop, possibly the best heritage linen shop in Australia; and a shop that will delight any collector of teddy bears.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Cairn Curran Reservoir is located about 10km west of Maldon. There are numerous boat ramps and places to picnic and fish along its shores. In summer it beckons swimmers, yachties and water-skiers. Moreover, there's a wonderful variety of birds that can be easily observed from the shoreline.

If the adventure of playing picturesque country golf courses is to your liking then there are four within easy reach from us; and, there are others at Maryborough, and within the greater Bendigo area. Come with a party and set yourselves the challenge of a tourney between yourselves.

Maldon abounds in interesting walks and there are a number of lookouts including the tower on Mount Tarrangower, where you can have a 365° view of the region. Whether you walk, ride or drive there is a variety of material available from us (or the Visitors Centre) to help guide you around.

FOOD & WINE

“A taste of gold” is how we describe the delightful offerings of food and wine in the region. Visit our local wineries, nearby orchards and enjoy the fine local produce offered in the district’s hotels and restaurants.

You can also experience the wonderful offerings at the various local markets:

Wesley Hill Community Market (Chewton) every Saturday 7:30 am to 1:00 pm; Castlemaine Farmer’s Market, monthly (the first Sunday) 9:00 am to 1:00 pm; Maldon Market, monthly (the second Sunday) 9:00am to 2:00 pm.

THE ARTS

Central Victoria boasts a large population of artists in every medium. Maldon has studios, shops and events that showcase the great art the Goldfields have to offer.

The Easter Art Walk, the biennial “Marchies”, a portrait competition, and The Annual Maldon Art Show attract artists from all over central Victoria and beyond.

Music and theatre also play a major part in the local scene with regular musical events at the local hotels. The Maldon Folk Festival is a major annual event held over the weekend preceding the running of the Melbourne Cup.

EVENT WEEKENDS

Whether it's the annual Maldon Folk Festival, the Maldon Shopping Spree, the Easter Fair, The All British (motorbikes) Rally, Maldon in Winter, Antiques and Collectables Weekend, The town wide Garage Sale, The Swap meet, The Mt. Tarrangower Historic Hill Climb, The Mt. Tarrangower Downhill, The Annual Camp Draught, or The Twilight Dinner Festival there is much to enjoy. Of course then there is all the fun stuff in nearby places as well.
